I am currently not accepting psychotherapy clients.
In my role as a Clinical Social Worker-Psychotherapist, I have borne witness to the human spirit’s resilience in overcoming significant challenges. At times, our vision may be clouded by difficulties, much like seeing only the muck in a pond. My aspiration has always been to guide individuals in recognizing the beauty of the lotus flower, thereby aiding them in introspection. Over my 25-year career, I have been privileged to accompany individuals on their journeys of self-discovery. Life is unpredictable, with unexpected twists and turns. In early 2019, I faced a life-altering event - a severe brain injury that forced me and my family onto a new path abruptly.
Post-accident adjustments were challenging not only for me but also for patients who had formed deep connections with me as their therapist. To keep them informed about my recovery journey, I transformed my website into a platform showcasing my creative expressions, such as paintings, poetry, and writing. This shift provided an outlet for communication when cognitive processing was arduous.
Five years after the car accident that altered my life trajectory significantly, I acknowledge substantial progress in my recovery journey while recognizing that I am not the same person I once was. Prior to the accident, I juggled multiple roles, including managing businesses, raising children, teaching meditation and yoga classes, overseeing staff members at various sites, engaging in public speaking events and trauma therapy training intensives, among other responsibilities.
Reflecting on the pre-accident version of myself evokes nostalgia for her ambitious pursuits; however, this humbling experience forced me to confront aspects of myself that had long been neglected amidst constant busyness. Through stillness and introspection post-accident confinement, when physical mobility was limited and self-expression challenged, art emerged as both a solace and a mode of communication.
Embracing vulnerability and acknowledging one's truth are essential components of healing - akin to how a lotus emerges from murky waters into blooming beauty. My transition into an artist post-accident underscored the transformative power of creativity amid adversity; art became not just an expression but also a means of transcending physical and emotional pain.
Strength emanates from authenticity; healing begins with surrendering fully to one's reality while embracing acceptance without reservation.
Ask yourself:
Are you proactive about your mental health? How so?
Have you thought about how would you respond in a crisis?
Do you have the emotional resilience to manage if something major happened in your life?
Are you living authentically? Do you know what this means?
Have you thought about how your values structure your decisions?
Is something from you past causing you to repeat old patterns in your life?
Know this:
We all need supports, guidance, and to feel like we are not alone while we journey through life events.
Life can be difficult and our mind can work against us when we are faced with major stressors. With some help, we can find our way through.
There is no shame in wanting or needing help. Accessing support systems is not new in society, therapists and coaches are a structured means for this support system that can significantly enrich your life.
A therapist knows how to create the space for you to open up, grow and challenge yourself.
